Hello KiC-Anki!

1–2 minutes

On December 13, 2024, I launched the KiC-Anki website to share a user-friendly, linguistically and pedagogically sound method of efficiently self-studying kanji.

KiC-Anki is for the serious student who has completed roughly two years of Japanese language study and who can read and write at least 350 kanji. (If you’ve completed Genki I and II or Minna no Nihongo, you should be all right.) It uses the Kanji in Context: Revised Edition (KiC) textbook and leverages the powerful Anki spaced repetition electronic flashcard application, hence the name “KiC-Anki.”

In developing KiC-Anki, I have made every effort to keep the process simple—no previous Anki experience necessary. Although simple on the “front end,” this method has involved a tremendous amount of research on optimal learning methods and, especially, the nature of kanji as a writing system. I’m certainly biased, but I do think it is the best study system out there currently. It also happens to be free (after the initial investment in the KiC textbook).

Happy studying!
